Coconut Syrup - Between the Tines

Raw Coconut Syrup!

I’ve been searching for this product for quite some time. I’ve been searching for so long, that I forgot where I originally heard about coconut syrup. I had been told by numerous shopkeepers in healthy food stores in and around Connecticut and New York City that this product didn’t exist or that they never heard of it.

Thank goodness for persistence! While randomly browsing the shelves at the local Whole Food store, searching (once again) for something completely different, it magically appeared right in front of me. Coconut Nectar or Coconut Syrup, call it what you will. What’s in a name, anyway? Raw, no less! Life can be sweet (pun intended) when good things happen unexpectedly.

The great thing about coconut syrup is that it’s pure tree sap. It’s gluten, GMO, and fat free. It’s also vegan! The list of benefits continue; not only is coconut nectar abundant in minerals and nutrients, it offers a very low Glycemic Index, which means it’s safe for diabetics. *

Coconut syrup is actually extruded from the coconut blossoms before they grow into coconuts. That means that the actual process of extracting the sap from the tree is really not the same as your typical maple syrup tree tapping process. The tree remains perfectly safe and undamaged.

Another difference between this precious fluid and maple syrup is that it’s already sweet from the moment it’s collected from the tree and doesn’t have to withstand any rigorous heating procedures in order to coax out the sweetness. Did you know that coconut palms are one of the oldest flowering trees in the world?

Try this addictive elixir as a topping for pancakes, waffles or cereal. Try it on top of a piece of toast covered with bananas and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Try this as a substitute for honey or sugar in tea, or perhaps on top of a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Check your local health food stores for availability. In most cases, the store can order it for you if it isn’t in stock.

*Remember, if you’re diabetic; always check with your doctor before trying any new sweetener substitute.

Happy Eating and Happy Holidays!!!

  1. You must be psychic! I rushed around looking for coconut syrup for my Christmas chocolate cake. I finally found some in a regular supermarket that was sweetened with sugar, but sugar often spoils natural flavors. As my only option, I used a little in the icing with lots of organic coconut oil, crushed almonds and a packaged sugar free vanilla icing for my diabetic Uncle.

Everybody raved about the flavor — it wasn’t too sweet, it had the fine crushed almond and fluffy consistency and a delicious coconut flavor. But natural flavors work better for me so I plan to check out the coconut syrup next time. Thanks, again! Rebecca

  2. Hi Rebecca,
Try your local Whole Foods Market, Fairway, Mrs. Green’s, or Vitamin Shoppe. If they don’t have it in stock, I’m certain they can order it for you. The brand I found is named Coconut Secret. Very pure, nothing added.

Thanks so much for reading my blog!
